April 2009 – Pretty, Please

April 2009 Mandala of the Month
April 2009 Mandala of the Month

I was barely started in my meditation for this month’s rather intriguing mandala when the view of the upper half just flew into my head.  The other half came in after I drew out the upper part.

The words, “Pretty, Please” came to mind while I was doing something else and I happened to ask myself, ‘what is the word or phrase for this mandala?’

When I hear the phrase ‘pretty, please’, I’m reminded of a small child being really cute, trying deparately to get what he/she wants.  What also comes to mind is the phrase, “make it pretty, please.”  That’s when I started pondering the word “pretty.”

We use “pretty” in several ways:  I feel pretty good…it looks pretty bad (isn’t that an oxymoron?)…you look pretty.  It’s the last one where we tend to get hung up.  I have people tell me often that they have stopped coloring because they have trouble making it look pretty.

Here’s what I have to say to that…FORGET ABOUT MAKING IT LOOK PRETTY…JUST HAVE FUN COLORING! It’s the experience of coloring that is more important.  If at the end of coloring you happen to like what you see, great!  Otherwise, let it go.  Just color…play with colors, practice, learn about colors…just color!

So, please, please, pretty please, pull out your crayons or pencils and color.  You’ll thank me for it later.  And if you can, have the whole family sit down and color together.

If the size of the file is a problem for you, let me know and I’ll make a smaller file version.

I would really enjoy hearing from you about your experience with coloring this or any of the other mandalas.  Feel free to submit comments (and especially your colorings) to this blog.

If you want to be notified when the next month’s mandala is available, subscribe in the upper right corner.

Happy Coloring!
