March 2013 Mandala of the Month

March 2013
Creating Balance

Download the March 2013 Mandala of the month

While we live on this earth, we exist in a dualistic environment. Hot. Cold. Day. Night. Left. Right. Male. Female. High. Low. Work. Play. Joy. Sorrow. Rain. Sun. Light. Dark. Sweet. Tart. Treasure. Junk. Head/Thought. Heart/Emotoin. Good. Bad.

For everything that exists, there appears to be an opposite. In order to know one and appreciate one, we need the know and appreciate the other.

Two concepts (how interesting) come to light with this month’s mandala:

  1. Without experiencing the negatives, how can we fully appreciate the positives?  And vice versa.
If we experience sunshine every single day, we become complacent of the joy of sunshine. When I lived in L.A. the constant sunshine depressed me. I longed for a rainy day. When it rains all the time, we tend to take the rain for granted and wish it would go away; forgetting how joyful it can be to walk in the rain or how valuable it is for our gardens.
How can we truly know and appreciate joy without having experienced sorrow?
  2. What one person considers negative another considers positive. And vice versa.
It’s been said that this concept is what makes the world go around. For me, all I need do is visit one of our wonderful thrift shops in town to experience the treasures that people donated as “junk”. Some people might consider it a negative that a person speaks loudly; to someone who’s hard of hearing, a loud voice is greatly appreciated. Or for an orator, speaking loudly is a great trait; for a librarian…that might be an issue that needs to be addressed.
One man’s meat is another man’s poison.

When it comes to emotions, we tend to stuff, hide or override the negative ones and only focus on experiencing the positive ones; hence the potential for the abuse of food, drugs, and/or alcohol. As Dr. Brené Brown explained in one of her TED talks:  when you numb one feeling you numb them all. So while we think we’re only numbing our anxieties, without realizing it, we are also numbing our ability to experience joy.

On a Personal Level

With regard to #1, our challenge becomes one where we take inventory of our day-to-day lives to see where we may be out of balance. Are we eating too much? (yes) Are we eating too little? (never) Are we working too much? (yes…but) Is there enough play? (no) Where are there excesses and where are we lacking? Are we giving/doing too much here and giving/doing too little over here? Throughout the month of March, become aware of areas that appear out of balance. Then find creative ways to restore that balance.

With regard to #2, our challenge becomes one where we embrace and honor all aspects of ourselves; positive and negative…which raises the issue of our definitions of positive and negative. Just how positive or negative are these aspects? I suspect that if we were to examine all our traits, we might be surprised to learn that, given certain circumstances, our perceived negative traits are really positives. There is a time and place for all aspects of ourselves.

If there’s any anxiety about expressing perceived negative traits explore creative ways to do so. For instance if expressing anger is difficult (unlady-like and all the BS), grab a pillow, connect with that anger, and then start banging it on your bed…the pillow and the bed can handle it. I did this years ago and at first it seemed silly however as I continued with it, I really started feeling it and it turned into quite a powerful and cathartic experience. Highly recommend it.

Bottom line

When we create balance in our lives, we become a more whole human being (a mandala), experiencing life to the fullest.

Ponder this as you color this month’s mandala.

Happy Coloring!

Download the December 2012 Mandala of the month

As the year comes to a close later this month, we’re being asked now to open up to the idea of infinite possibilities. We can continue with the same-old routine or we can look beyond to something even more for ourselves both individually and as a global community.

What kind of a world do we want to live in? What kind of bodies do we want to live in? What kind of community do we want to live in? What kind of home do we want to live in? Ponder beyond just the physical aspects of these questions, to answers that also incorporate our emotional, mental, and spiritual selves.

We may find it difficult to come up with ways to change our global existence when we ask “how can I…one human being…make a difference?” On an individual level, we can strive to be our best with everything we do each day. We can start by simply asking ourselves & answering questions like “am I doing _________ to the best of my ability?” or “is what I am about to for the greatest good of all, including myself?”. Imagine what this world would be like if we ALL lived this way? I know it would be amazing!

In our relationships (one-on-one, in groups, on the web), we can ask ourselves (and answer) “is what I am about to say or do divisive or does it make strides in uniting us?” or “am I truly listening to this person or am I already plotting what I’m going to say next.” We start by being fully present when interacting with others.

With the new year approaching and even more importantly, with the new 26,000 year cycle of the Mayan Calendar approaching (December 22, 2012), we need to stop doing/being/believing that which is failing to serve us any more, keeping us stuck in old patterns. Create new patterns of success, peace, love, joy, and creativity. For it is in these patterns that we can change our world for the better. Start with baby steps and work up to the bigger stuff.

Deep down we all want this…and we all know better . It’s time to move forward to avail ourselves of the world of infinite possibilities. We can do this!

Ponder this as you color this month’s mandala of the month.

Happy Coloring! Happy Holidays to all!

“Practice” November 2012 MotM

Download the November 2012 Mandala of the month

We as a culture tend to overlook the art of practice. We want what we want when we want it. We want to do/be/have something and if it fails to happen on the first try we often throw in the towel and move onto the next thing ultimately feeling frustrated and down on ourselves for a myriad of reasons.

The Art of Practice takes time, focus, and energy. To truly master anything, we must give it our full attention over and over again.

I find that to be most true when it comes to quieting the mind. Over the years I set up the intention to meditate, then when I actually do it, I start out okay and then the mind chatter sets in and I give up, saying to myself “I can’t do this”, feeling like such a loser.

Last month at a psychic fair I did 7 “Inner-Self Mandalas & Readings” and as usually happens, a theme weaved its way through most of the readings: practice.  I found that most of the people I read for had the same resistance towards varying forms of meditation and inner work. “I tried that and it doesn’t work” or “I can’t do it” were common responses.

For each of them I reminded them that it takes practice. That with each practice it will improve and become easier. Instead of trying to do it for 20 or 30 minutes. Just do if for 1 minute a day…then up it to 2 minutes a day.

It’s more about the quality of the time than the quantity of time. With each iteration, strive to improve. This also holds true for anything else you are striving to do or be.

Hang in there, keep at it, you can do it…just allow yourself the time to practice…you are worth it!

Ponder this as you color this month’s mandala of the month.

September 2012 Mandala of the Month

September 2012: Stay Calm

Download the September 2012 Mandala of the month (link fixed 9/2/12)

When I received the title to this month’s mandala, I realized that we all talk about needing to be calm, to calm down, to relax, breathe yet we overlook or forget about the next part: STAYING calm.

I find I can usually calm down when I need to however before I know it, I’m having to remind myself to calm down again.  I can finish a beautiful meditation and within 10 minutes I’m buzzing around doing this and that, all hyped up and raring to go.

This month’s mandala reminds us to find a way to stay in “calm” once we achieve it. I know that the more we practice this concept the longer we can stay in this “calm” state.

The image of this mandala looks like a human head with an outer band around it, acting like a shield keeping the chaos out and the calmness in. It reminds us that regardless of what’s going on around us, internally we want/need to stay calm.

I sense that the center of the ‘head’ marks the location of the pineal gland. Rene Descartes called it the “seat of the soul”. It produces melatonin…

“a structurally simple hormone that communicates information about environmental lighting to various parts of the body. Ultimately, melatonin has the ability to entrain biological rhythms…. The light-transducing ability of the pineal gland has led some to call the pineal the “third eye”.  www.vivo.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/endocrine/otherendo/pineal.html

For more on the pineal gland, including its metaphysical properties & history:  www.wayfinding.net/pineal.htm  and   www.viewzone.com/pineal.html

Tom Kenyon, a sound healer, offers an original 5-minute piece of meditation music specifically for the pineal gland. It’s free to download after you agree to his copyright statement. Once on the “Listening” page, scroll down to find the pineal gland meditation:  www.tomkenyon.com/listening

So let’s take time this month to bring our “calmness” to the next level. Be calm…stay calm.

Ponder this as you color this month’s mandala.

August 2012

Download the August 2012 Mandala of the month

We all have too much on our plates; to the point where we spend our time running around from one thing to the next without truly being in the moment.

And because we have so much going on, we tend to overlook our health and well-being in the process. I know for me if I stay up way past my normal bed time I sometimes skip brushing my teeth because I’m too tired and all I want to do is go to sleep.

I also seem to pass on meditating more times than not. When I have the thought to do it, I immediately hear an inner voice say “you can do that later…you’ve got too many other things to do right now.” Most times I listen to that voice, thus ignoring the first.

A couple of weeks ago I read something that gave me a different perspective on time and priorities. Sadly I forgot where I saw it otherwise I’d post the link to it here. The gist of it, however, was to rephrase what we’re really saying when we say “I’m too tired” or “I can do it later”….namely, “my teeth are not a priority”…”my spiritual well-being is not a priority.”

Yikes!  When said like that, it gives each of these statements a whole new meaning…both of which I know and feel to be false. I do care about my teeth and I do care about my spiritual well-being.

So now when I catch myself saying “I’m too tired…” or “I’ll do it later”, I quickly rephrase it to “taking good care of my teeth is a priority”… “my spiritual well-being is worthy of my time.”

This month let’s pay attention to what’s really a priority and what’s really just avoidance in action. Of course this all begs the question…who is this voice and why is it sabotaging us?  Maybe we can explore that next month.

Ponder this as you color this month’s mandala of the month.

July 2012 MotM

Download the July 2012 Mandala of the month

Our divine nature forever pushes us forward on our spiritual journey as we experience our lives on this planet as human beings. Often times we lose sight of this, fears fog our way making us want to stay in place or go backwards, which is neither good nor bad…it just is.

This mandala reminds us that how we move forward on our journey is immaterial. We can drift along with the wind, floating above it all as if in a hot air balloon, giving us amazing views, relying on outside forces to move us, watching the lives of others from afar. We can speed along on a super highway giving us a direct path with full control of our speed and fewer opportunities for little side adventures. We can casually drive through back roads over hills and through valleys which takes longer while giving us many opportunities to meet many people along the way along with experiencing out-of-the-way adventures.

Each of these ways, along with countless others, have their own experiences and opportunities. At some point in our lives we probably tried any number of these paths.

Our challenge becomes being okay with whichever way we choose regardless of what others choose to do as well as being okay with how others choose to move along on their journey. It’s okay if we/they want to speed along; it’s okay if we/they want to hover for awhile; it’s okay if we/they prefer to meander along.

We just need to become aware of our own forward movement and how we choose to move along. If we feel stuck, confused, or lost it’s just that we have forgotten about who we are and where we are on our journey.

It’s okay. Breathe. Time to find our way again.

I feel compelled to tell you what I often hear my guides tell me:

You have all the time you need to do all that you need to do.

Ponder this as you color this month’s mandala of the month.

June 2012: Space & Time

Download the June 2012 Mandala of the month

Space and time are what make our existence on Earth possible to manage. Without it, everything would appear a cosmic jumble, beyond our human capabilities to handle.

This mandala reminds us that while it would appear that we each exist in our own little worlds, our own little “boxes”…in reality we are all the same and we are all connected.

And judging from this image it would seem that if we were to raise ourselves up above the edges of our “boxes”, we would see how we are all connected.

Some ways we can see beyond our “boxes”…

  • instead of initially reacting to circumstances as we usually do, take an extra moment to look again and ask ourselves…”what’s really going on here”
  • know that we are all “the Light of God”…regardless of evidence to the contrary
  • find a way to see through the illusions of fear, shame, and doubt (our own and in others)…coloring mandalas works great for this
  • from A Course in Miracles…ask Holy Spirit to let us see things differently
  • another prayer option: “Lord, help me forgive those who sin differently than I”
  • remember that we are all a reflection of each other…we can only see what we know…both negatively and, more importantly, positively. If we can know greatest in others, we can also know it within ourselves
  • watch how children do it

Existing in this space & time universe definitely has its perks…it’s an ever unfolding story of drama, humor, tragedy, love, mystery, and more. Just remember to look up once in a while.

Ponder this as you color this month’s mandala of the month.

May 2012 MotM

Download the May 2012 Mandala of the month

While drawing out this month’s MotM, I kept hearing Neil Young’s song, “Helpless” and it felt like it wanted to be this month’s theme.

We normally associate helpless-ness as a bad thing. Merriam-Webster.com defines the word as 1) lacking protection or support and 2) marked by an inability to act or react.

With so much going on in this mandala, it can be a bit overwhelming much like our lives can sometime be at times. I know for me I feel most helpless when I find myself running around in circles, being pulled in every which direction to the point where I wonder what the heck to do next, feeling lost and confused…basically…helpless.

So what to do…what to do…what to do…in these often helpless times?

Breathe…go within…feel your heart…be still…and listen  (repeat as needed)

Every time I do this, it surprises me how quickly an answer comes to me. This also happens when I color mandalas.

For those of you who struggle with meditation or quieting the mind, coloring mandalas can be a great alternative. You can experience the joy and the relaxation that comes with coloring.

If you have a particular issue, set an intention before you start coloring to receive insights about it while you color…then just be with the coloring.

Instead of feeling helpless, reach inward for help…it’s always there for us. While you’re at it, bring out your favorite set of color pencils and start coloring. :-)

April 2012: Relax

Download the April 2012 Mandala of the month

Hopefully you found time to relax while coloring March’s mandala of the month…and more importantly that you can continue to find ways to relax from now on.

This month’s mandala asks us to be open to new ideas, new perspectives, changing how we view things, ideas, people, our thoughts, our beliefs, and so on.

We can start by questioning our thoughts and beliefs by asking…”is that true?…do I really believe that?” We may find that we thought something for so long that now we believe it to be true when in reality it’s a veil covering our real truth.

Think of all the times you say hello: when you meet someone new, when you greet people at your door, when you answer the phone. Sherlock Holmes would say “hello” whenever he spotted a surprising clue to whatever mystery he eventually solved.

What new ideas can we be surprised by? What new perspectives can we be open to observing? How can we open our minds to new possibilities?

Ponder these questions as you color April’s mandala of the month.

Coloring Tip #4

Taking this month’s theme into consideration, change your perspective in how you color. Turn the mandala around, find a different viewpoint. For instance if you were to turn this mandala 180∘, the triangles will point downward, giving the mandala a whole different look.

Even if you’re coloring something that has an obvious right side up and an upside down, turn it around to different angles. You may be surprised with what you see and end up coloring it differently than had you left it at its original perspective.

Dec 2011

Download the December 2011 Mandala of the month

We often hear the phrase just “let it go.” And yet we hear this without being offered any ways to do so. How do we let go when we are still aware of that which we are to let go. Sure it’s easy to say, following through becomes the challenge.

So along with coloring this month’s mandala of the month, we have a way to work on letting go…if we so desire.

The “letting go” of which we speak of here is the letting go of old patterns, beliefs and/or limitations that have long stopped serving us in any positive way. Some of my old patterns that I want to release are…procrastinating, being messy/disorganized, being 15 minutes ahead of where I am actually present, and judgement (both of others and of myself).

Here’s how it works.

  1. Come up with 5-10 positive attributes you would like to be (calm, confident, responsible, orderly, etc.)
  2. Pick the top 5 and write one in each of the 5 smaller circles in the mandala. In my example I wrote “calm” in one of the smaller circles.
  3. Sample

In the 5 lower boxes of the stack of boxes around the mandala, write down a word or phrase describing what stops you from experiencing that positive attribute. You can put in the box to the left or right of where you wrote the positive attribute. In my example I wrote “worry”.

  4. Now in the smaller box, draw in a symbol to represent what you can do to transform the limitation into a positive. Make the symbol something that will help you remember the transformative action you can take. In my example, I know that taking some deep breathes helps me to calm down so I drew something that looks to me like a big inhale and then exhale.
  5. When you’ve done this all the way around, you can then color the mandala. All the while being aware of your limitations being transformed into your positive attributes.

The center of this mandala represents your well-being, the essence of who you are. You can think of the transformations being channeled into the mandala’s center and then radiating out to your positive attributes.

You can repeat this process as often as you need for as many old patterns, beliefs and limitations as you want to release.

I know many methods exist for helping us let go of stuff…this is just one. You’re welcome to pursue any practice that will help you. The sooner we can let go of these old patterns and limitations, the sooner we can begin living authentic lives.

It’s also a great way to prepare for the new year. :-)

Here’s a great blog post from Daily Om about Revealing your True Self.
