For the last 5 or 6 days I’ve been hearing the word “simplify” over and over again in my head. I’m pretty sure it comes from this feeling of being overwhelmed with all that I want, should and need to do…both in my personal and artist/business life.

At times, this feeling wakes me up in the middle of the night, triggering my fears and worries about how I’ll ever get it all done. Then during the day it seems like more stuff gets piled on and I end up doing everything BUT what I really wanted to do.

When I allow myself to quiet my busy mind, I’ll hear this voice that asks “what absolutely has to be done right now?” That’s when I stop and realize I can whittle my long to-do list down to a more doable 2 or 3 items, which then eases the pressure a bit. And more importantly, I can focus more clearly on just those things and actually get them done.

This mandala wants us to examine our lives to find areas where we can simplify. I look around and wonder “do I really need all these ___________?” (gadgets, books, clothes, baskets, shoes, mugs, art supplies, pens, bars of chocolate, photographs, etc. etc. etc.) or “do I really need to do ___________ right now or can it wait for another day?”

Even the mandala for this month is a bit simpler than ones perviously. It will allow you to color it in as is or play around with adding your own doodles, patterns, and shapes within the different sections.

What this mandala is really asking us to do is to determine what’s really of value to us and then let go of all the rest. And before we add anything new to our lives, ask ourselves “is this really necessary?” or “why do I want this?” It it fails to pass the “value” test…let it go. Too often we just add more on because we think we need it or we’re afraid will miss out on something if we pass on it. Time to break out of these old habits.

Our mantra for this month: Simplify! Simplify! Simplify!

With simplicity comes freedom. With simplicity comes creativity. With simplicity comes joy.

October 2012 MotM

Rise and shine, folks! The time is now. Stop the excuses. Waiting for things to be perfect before we put ourselves out there…ain’t gonna cut it any more.

While design-wise this month’s mandala looks rather simplistic, it actually allows you to make it as intricate and detailed as you want it to be. The control of its destiny is in your hands.

Of course you’re always free to color the mandalas of the month any way you please, for this month, I would like to offer a possible suggestion on how to approach the coloring of “Reaching Out.”

Think of this mandala as an expression of how you really want to be in this world. What images or colors would fill the “sun” (heart/soul) area? What’s in the background supporting you? What fears/blocks (things in front of the sun) have kept you from moving forward? What gifts (ribbons) have you yet to fully unveil to the world.

“Reaching Out” encourages us to fully extend ourselves, to grow into the ones we  are truly  meant to be. Yes, it’s scary and we risk being vulnerable… on the other hand, waiting until things are just right may never happen. It not now…when?

A great resource for working through our fear of vulnerability, is the work of Dr. Brené Brown. Her new book “Daring Greatly” uses Roosevelt’s quote as inspiration along with the 12 years of research on shame, vulnerability, and more importantly on living a whole-hearted life. I highly recommend her 2 TED talks.

Another perspective on reaching out…people are waiting in the wings, waiting for you to be fully out there so that you can help them, show them how it’s done.

September 2012 Mandala of the Month

September 2012: Stay Calm

When I received the title to this month’s mandala, I realized that we all talk about needing to be calm, to calm down, to relax, breathe yet we overlook or forget about the next part: STAYING calm.

I find I can usually calm down when I need to however before I know it, I’m having to remind myself to calm down again.  I can finish a beautiful meditation and within 10 minutes I’m buzzing around doing this and that, all hyped up and raring to go.

This month’s mandala reminds us to find a way to stay in “calm” once we achieve it. I know that the more we practice this concept the longer we can stay in this “calm” state.

The image of this mandala looks like a human head with an outer band around it, acting like a shield keeping the chaos out and the calmness in. It reminds us that regardless of what’s going on around us, internally we want/need to stay calm.

I sense that the center of the ‘head’ marks the location of the pineal gland. Rene Descartes called it the “seat of the soul”. It produces melatonin…

July 2012 MotM

Our divine nature forever pushes us forward on our spiritual journey as we experience our lives on this planet as human beings. Often times we lose sight of this, fears fog our way making us want to stay in place or go backwards, which is neither good nor bad…it just is.

This mandala reminds us that how we move forward on our journey is immaterial. We can drift along with the wind, floating above it all as if in a hot air balloon, giving us amazing views, relying on outside forces to move us, watching the lives of others from afar. We can speed along on a super highway giving us a direct path with full control of our speed and fewer opportunities for little side adventures. We can casually drive through back roads over hills and through valleys which takes longer while giving us many opportunities to meet many people along the way along with experiencing out-of-the-way adventures.

Each of these ways, along with countless others, have their own experiences and opportunities. At some point in our lives we probably tried any number of these paths.

Our challenge becomes being okay with whichever way we choose regardless of what others choose to do as well as being okay with how others choose to move along on their journey. It’s okay if we/they want to speed along; it’s okay if we/they want to hover for awhile; it’s okay if we/they prefer to meander along.

We just need to become aware of our own forward movement and how we choose to move along. If we feel stuck, confused, or lost it’s just that we have forgotten about who we are and where we are on our journey.

It’s okay. Breathe. Time to find our way again.

I feel compelled to tell you what I often hear my guides tell me:

You have all the time you need to do all that you need to do.

August 2011 MOTM

What’s in your field of dreams? Do you have a field of dreams? At the moment I have a backyard of weeds, with some tomatoes and green beans making a valiant effort to thrive regardless of the condition of our yard.

I admit I lack any real talent when it comes to gardening. I envy my friends and neighbors who do remarkable things with their yards. They seem to live and breath gardening.

Okay, I went a little off topic. This month’s mandala invites us to create a field of dreams, to make them a little more tangible than just mere  thoughts in our heads. Think of each ‘blossom’ in the mandala as a goal or dream.

What do you dream about? I have a few dreams that I tend to treat as passing fancies with thoughts such as “yeah…right” or “if only” or “impossible” … to name a few. It’s amazing how limiting beliefs limit my dreams from becoming reality.

So this month it’s all about planting the seeds of our dreams regardless of our internal neigh-sayers. Time to dust them off, take them from our thoughts and see them face to face. That’s all we have to do for right now. Just writing them out starts the ‘planting’ process. If you feel compelled to take any additional action towards making the dream a reality, by all means, do so.

I know we’ve held back from pursuing some of our dreams by taking to heart what  those close to us say such as “you don’t want to do that” or “you’ll never be able to that” or maybe we were the ones saying these things to ourselves.

Here’s a new response to such comments…”yeah, you may right but I’m going to go for it anyway.” Usually our biggest ‘failures’ are not from trying something only to have it not work out the way we expected…they become learning experiences. Our biggest failure is to not have tried at all. Just feel the fear and do it anyway. To quote the movie “Bounce”…it’s not brave unless your scared.”

So I ask again…what’s in your field of dreams?

MotM: July 2011

It seems quite fitting (at least in the states) that “bursting with light” is the theme for July as we usually celebrate our independence (4th of July) with fireworks. They light up the sky with bright colors, explosions and beautiful starbursts and flares.

This mandala focuses on more than just fireworks in the sky…it’s about the fireworks in our hearts and souls. It’s that part of us that we all, to some degree, hide from the rest of the world for any number of reasons, with fear being at the core.

“Bursting with Light” encourages us to let our light shine…and more than just by a little. We only need a small spark on which to grow and shine light on our true, authentic self.

In the movie “Runaway Bride”, Julia Roberts’ character runs away from every man she’s about to marry. A clue to her reasons comes with her taste in eggs. It seems that depending on how her fiance likes his eggs cooked, she unconsciously adopts the same style. Later in the movie she decides to cook eggs every way she can to find out for herself what she really likes. You’ll have to watch the movie to find out which one she picks. :-)

This movie offers a metaphor for our lives…are we making our own choices or letting others decide for us, consciously or unconsciously? Are we letting our fear of what others say/think, hide our light?

The time has come for us to come forward, bursting with light, letting our true selves, our true natures shine forth.

I knew several days in advance that the subject of November’s MotM would be about “allowing” because for weeks that word, and variations of it, has come up repeatedly in articles/books I’ve been reading or from listening to podcasts.

What does it mean to “allow”? On dictionary.com the first definition of allow is “to give permission to or for; permit”.  It is on this definition that we will focus.

ALLOW #1

I  heard Noah St. John on a recent HealingWiththeMasters.com webcast* say something very profound (IMHO)…”give yourself permission to succeed.” Wow…for the last four or five years I’ve heard all this talk about “The Secret”, the Law of Intention, and the Law of Attraction (just to name a few); how all you have to do is intend something or create a vision board and it will happen. I, like I imagine many of you, struggle with this concept.  I intend and I intend and what happens? zilch, nada, zero, zip.   Then I get down on myself because, yet again, there must be something wrong with me if I’m failing to make this, and other concepts like it, work.  Yet another opportunity for me to be down on myself.

With hearing Noah’s phrase “permission to succeed” I realized a missing piece of the puzzle for me. I can make all the intentions I want, from trivial things such as finding a great parking space downtown to the amazingly wild ideas like creating a ‘creativity center’ or having a very successful coloring book career; however if I fail to allow it to happen with negative self-talk and self- sabotaging actions, my intentions are doomed before I even begin.

Two weeks ago, I thought about talking with someone about an idea I had and IMMEDIATELY, without skipping a heartbeat, I heard this other voice in my head say “no one wants to hear what you have to say.” It struck me as very profound on two counts 1) that I was aware enough to actually hear it, and 2) that some part of my believes that what I have to say lacks any value to anyone. As Dr. Phil would call it…it was a defining moment for me.

In order for me to allow, I need to pay closer attention to those subtle negative thoughts, to face them knowing that if I put them there in the first place, I can also change them or, better yet, delete them.  What kind of negative thoughts have you’ve heard in your head?  I’m too old…it’s been done before…who cares…what if I screw it up…what if everyone hates it…I’m not good enough, and the worst one of all…I can’t.

ALLOW #2

On October 21, the daily quote from Abraham-Hicks Publications offered another interesting viewpoint on “allowing”:

“Negative emotion is your indicator of resistance, while positive emotion is your indicator of allowance. And they are on the same meter: allowance; resistance. Allowance; resistance.”

A great example of this for me is when I’m running late for a meeting or an appointment.  When I start rushing around and panicking, chaotic things start happening like I forget things, knock things over, bang into things, forget where my keys are, etc.  Once I’m in the car I tend to be stuck behind someone just crawling along,  I hit every red light, I become even more impatient and more stressed out, which winds up making me even more late and more of an emotional wreck by the time I arrive.  However, if I take a moment to just allow for the fact that “I am late” and accept it, my approach to my appointment takes on a very calm and relaxed mood.  My calm state, appears to defy time, most of the lights are green, and I arrive sooner than expected and often times the person I’m meeting is either running late as well or they were busy and would have kept me waiting had I been on time.

This “running late” experience shows me that when I resist my current situation (being late), I’m agitated and all kinds of chaotic things start happening.  When I allow myself to just go with it and accept the situation as it is, to allow it to just unfold before me, everything goes smoother and calmer.   Of course what I really need to do is take a look at why I’m late in the first place…maybe that will be next month’s focus.  :-)

ETA:  Another example of allowing vs resistance:

Am I allowing myself to be in the moment as I’m walking my dogs, enjoying the fresh air, and exercising?  or am I resisting by walking my dogs while my mind focuses on what I need to do at home or relive a hurtful conversation from two weeks ago.

Am I allowing myself to be 100% focused on my driving or do I resist it by focusing on other things while I drive, arriving at my destination wondering how I got there?

Can you think of any other examples?

IN SUMMARY…

I presented two versions of “allow” here: 1) give yourself permission to succeed, to allow yourself to strive for your goals/intentions without the negative, subconscious talk; and 2) just be where you are, allow yourself to be in the moment, start from there and then move forward without judgment, self-persecution or self-sabotage.  Ponder either one or both as you color this month.

Allow yourself time to color, give yourself permission to spend some time taking care of yourself, to have some fun.

As human beings we live in a dualistic world; a world of opposites.  What often ends up happening is that the two opposites tend to oppose each other.

I’m here to remind us (as others are doing as well), that rather than oppose the opposites, embrace the opposites, find balance.

We need the light as we need the dark.  We need the sun as we need the moon.  We  need women as we need men.  How can we know good without knowing bad?  How can we experience joy without knowing sad?  Without up how can we have down…which would make enjoying roller coasters rather difficult.

I’ve probably said this before and I’m going to say it again…if we want to be happy, healthy, and wise, we need to find that balance between all these polarizing opposites.   Seek the value in both; find ways to have them work together.  This can be especially challenging with the upcoming mid-term elections for us here in the United States.

At the very core of our imbalance, is our left and right brain.  We as a culture ten to glorify the left brain (analytical) over the right brain (creativity)…just notice what gets cut from school budgets first?  music or science?

It amazes me that the powers that be have yet to figure out that maybe the best solution is to use the creative arts (music, art, dance, theater, etc) to teach the analytical (science, math, history, etc).  How fun would it be to have students put on a play about history; incorporating writing, art, music, etc. along with the historical data in the telling and learning of history?  Or how about using geometry to create art?  Most of my mandalas were created using math and geometry.

So ponder where in your life you need balance as you color this month’s mandala of the month.  Just the mere act of coloring balances both sides of your brain…that’s why you’ll feel more relaxed and focused after coloring. :-)

The second definition of “wellspring” on dictionary.com states:

“a source or supply of anything, esp.
when considered inexhaustible…”

It is this definition of which this mandala speaks.  We are the source of all that we need.  I know…very new agey…and yet very true.

I recently read that we are a consumer-based society…consume…consume…consume.  And why are we consuming so much only to consume even more?  Just yesterday I caught myself eating for the sake of eating, without even being hungry.  I continued to eat anyway…my reasoning?  because I wanted to.   Now is this the voice of a mature adult or a three-year old?  Hmm?

Consuming goes beyond just food…it encompasses everything: clothes, cars, toys, shoes, etc.  Why do I feel the need to buy more clothes when in my closet I have perfectly fine clothes to wear…granted with all the eating lately, some of them fail to fit me any more.

I’ll tell you why…because I (we) believe it will make me (us) happy…I’ll feel better wearing a pretty new blouse.  And yet, I have a closet of pretty blouses that I thought when I bought them would make me happy, now they seem boring and dull.  The only thing that has changed about these blouses is my attitude toward them.

The joy we seek is within us.

Try this experiment.  Imagine that you’re sitting in front of the TV with your lottery ticket.  The nice lady on the screen is calling out the winning numbers one by one.  Lo and behold as she calls out each number you see that each one of them matches one of the numbers on your ticket.  Your heart starts to beat faster, you’re sitting  more upright in your chair, the excitement and anticipation is growing with each number.  When she’s done and recites the numbers again, you see that you have everyone of the numbers.  You stop breathing for a few seconds while your brain processes what has just happened.  And then with a huge explosion of excitement you jump out of your seat screaming, “I won!  I won! I won!”  Now stop right there.  Capture that moment…feel that excitement…let your imagination run wild with the shear joy of just winning $250,000,000!   Bask in this feeling for a while.  Really feel it!

That my friends is what we really want…what we are all seeking…that joy, that happiness, that excitement.  We just created it!  And we can create it anytime we like because within each and every one of us is this endless supply, this wellspring, of joy and happiness that we can tap into whenever we like…and IT’S FREE!

The money, the cars, the shoes, the clothes may all disappear or wear out; however, this wellspring of joy is constant and forever.  While it may appear that I’m encouraging us to stopping buying stuff, what I’m really suggesting is that we become aware of WHY we’re buying the cars, the clothes, the shoes, and eating that second brownie.   Am I buying that cute pair of red shoes because they would be fun to wear and would match an outfit already in my closet?  Or am I buying it because I’m feeling down and believe that having these shoes will make me happy.

UPDATE:  After I published this posting this morning, I discovered an article published today in the Wall Street Journal entitled “Money can buy one form of happiness” by staff writer Rob Stein.  How serendipitous!  It’s a very interesting read.  Here’s a quote from the article:

“The thing I think is exciting about this is money can make you feel better in a limited way,” said Barbara L. Fredrickson, a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “But positive feelings like enjoyment and laughing can do a whole lot more for people. They can help people grow and learn and become a more resilient, better version of yourself.”

While first published over 10 years ago, I am now reading “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle.  A few years ago I glanced at a friend’s copy and tossed it aside as fluff.  I wish I could remember what inspired me to read it now.   What an amazing book.  If you have yet to read and want to find peace in your life, I highly recommend it.

In essence he’s letting is know that only NOW can we change anything, do anything, feel anything, experience anything.  Everything else is either in the past or in the illusion of the future.

It comes down to being aware, conscious NOW.  It’s a tall order and by far the most difficult thing for me to do.  Often I find myself mulling over something that happened in the past or trying to imagine a future event or conversation…all the while missing what’s going on right NOW.  The paradox is that when we are aware of this mind chatter, that’s when it stops.

He also tells us that in any given now we have three options:  1) walk away,  2) change something, or 3) accept where we are.  Then in the next now we can re-evaluate our three options.

Our reward for this awareness?  Peace.  It’s remarkable.  Every time I catch myself, I calm down, my mind becomes quiet, and I have a few moments of peace.  I’m learning that this requires diligence and each time it becomes easier.

As you color this month’s mandala see if you can stay in the present moment, enjoy the process of coloring for the sake of coloring, letting go of the outcome.
