November 2010 MOTM

Download the November 2010 Mandala of the month

I knew several days in advance that the subject of November’s MotM would be about “allowing” because for weeks that word, and variations of it, has come up repeatedly in articles/books I’ve been reading or from listening to podcasts.

What does it mean to “allow”? On dictionary.com the first definition of allow is “to give permission to or for; permit”.  It is on this definition that we will focus.

ALLOW #1

I  heard Noah St. John on a recent HealingWiththeMasters.com webcast* say something very profound (IMHO)…”give yourself permission to succeed.” Wow…for the last four or five years I’ve heard all this talk about “The Secret”, the Law of Intention, and the Law of Attraction (just to name a few); how all you have to do is intend something or create a vision board and it will happen. I, like I imagine many of you, struggle with this concept.  I intend and I intend and what happens? zilch, nada, zero, zip.   Then I get down on myself because, yet again, there must be something wrong with me if I’m failing to make this, and other concepts like it, work.  Yet another opportunity for me to be down on myself.

With hearing Noah’s phrase “permission to succeed” I realized a missing piece of the puzzle for me. I can make all the intentions I want, from trivial things such as finding a great parking space downtown to the amazingly wild ideas like creating a ‘creativity center’ or having a very successful coloring book career; however if I fail to allow it to happen with negative self-talk and self- sabotaging actions, my intentions are doomed before I even begin.

Two weeks ago, I thought about talking with someone about an idea I had and IMMEDIATELY, without skipping a heartbeat, I heard this other voice in my head say “no one wants to hear what you have to say.” It struck me as very profound on two counts 1) that I was aware enough to actually hear it, and 2) that some part of my believes that what I have to say lacks any value to anyone. As Dr. Phil would call it…it was a defining moment for me.

In order for me to allow, I need to pay closer attention to those subtle negative thoughts, to face them knowing that if I put them there in the first place, I can also change them or, better yet, delete them.  What kind of negative thoughts have you’ve heard in your head?  I’m too old…it’s been done before…who cares…what if I screw it up…what if everyone hates it…I’m not good enough, and the worst one of all…I can’t.

ALLOW #2

On October 21, the daily quote from Abraham-Hicks Publications offered another interesting viewpoint on “allowing”:

“Negative emotion is your indicator of resistance, while positive emotion is your indicator of allowance. And they are on the same meter: allowance; resistance. Allowance; resistance.”

A great example of this for me is when I’m running late for a meeting or an appointment.  When I start rushing around and panicking, chaotic things start happening like I forget things, knock things over, bang into things, forget where my keys are, etc.  Once I’m in the car I tend to be stuck behind someone just crawling along,  I hit every red light, I become even more impatient and more stressed out, which winds up making me even more late and more of an emotional wreck by the time I arrive.  However, if I take a moment to just allow for the fact that “I am late” and accept it, my approach to my appointment takes on a very calm and relaxed mood.  My calm state, appears to defy time, most of the lights are green, and I arrive sooner than expected and often times the person I’m meeting is either running late as well or they were busy and would have kept me waiting had I been on time.

This “running late” experience shows me that when I resist my current situation (being late), I’m agitated and all kinds of chaotic things start happening.  When I allow myself to just go with it and accept the situation as it is, to allow it to just unfold before me, everything goes smoother and calmer.   Of course what I really need to do is take a look at why I’m late in the first place…maybe that will be next month’s focus.  :-)

ETA:  Another example of allowing vs resistance:

Am I allowing myself to be in the moment as I’m walking my dogs, enjoying the fresh air, and exercising?  or am I resisting by walking my dogs while my mind focuses on what I need to do at home or relive a hurtful conversation from two weeks ago.

Am I allowing myself to be 100% focused on my driving or do I resist it by focusing on other things while I drive, arriving at my destination wondering how I got there?

Can you think of any other examples?

IN SUMMARY…

I presented two versions of “allow” here: 1) give yourself permission to succeed, to allow yourself to strive for your goals/intentions without the negative, subconscious talk; and 2) just be where you are, allow yourself to be in the moment, start from there and then move forward without judgment, self-persecution or self-sabotage.  Ponder either one or both as you color this month.

Allow yourself time to color, give yourself permission to spend some time taking care of yourself, to have some fun.

Happy Coloring!

While first published over 10 years ago, I am now reading “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle.  A few years ago I glanced at a friend’s copy and tossed it aside as fluff.  I wish I could remember what inspired me to read it now.   What an amazing book.  If you have yet to read and want to find peace in your life, I highly recommend it.

In essence he’s letting is know that only NOW can we change anything, do anything, feel anything, experience anything.  Everything else is either in the past or in the illusion of the future.

It comes down to being aware, conscious NOW.  It’s a tall order and by far the most difficult thing for me to do.  Often I find myself mulling over something that happened in the past or trying to imagine a future event or conversation…all the while missing what’s going on right NOW.  The paradox is that when we are aware of this mind chatter, that’s when it stops.

He also tells us that in any given now we have three options:  1) walk away,  2) change something, or 3) accept where we are.  Then in the next now we can re-evaluate our three options.

Our reward for this awareness?  Peace.  It’s remarkable.  Every time I catch myself, I calm down, my mind becomes quiet, and I have a few moments of peace.  I’m learning that this requires diligence and each time it becomes easier.

As you color this month’s mandala see if you can stay in the present moment, enjoy the process of coloring for the sake of coloring, letting go of the outcome.

February 2010 Mandala of the Month

February 2010 MOTM

Download the February 2010 Mandala of the Month (~540kb)

When I asked the question “what’s the word for this mandala” the first word that blasted into my head  was “RESPECT” to which I was immediately reminded of Aretha Franklin and the lyrics to her song,  ”R…E…S…P…E…C…T….find out what it means to me…”

In looking up its definition, “respect” is both a noun and a verb.  As a verb it means “to feel or show deferential regard for; esteem.”  As a noun it means “the state of being regarded with honor or esteem; a willingness to show consideration or appreciation.”

And what kind of respect are we talking about?  The kind we feel out of honor or the kind we feel out of fear?  Parents/leaders/employers/elected officials/etc. often demand respect failing to realize that they have to EARN it.

So this begs the question, how well do we respect ourselves?  Do we treat ourselves with honor and appreciation?  Or do we often put ourselves down, act in a way that demonstrates low self worth or esteem.    Are we really eating that that second helping of dessert because we honor and respect ourselves?  How would our behavior change if we truly appreciated ourselves?

Which then leads into how well do we respect others?  Have you watched the news lately?  We have a lot of work to do.  Our country, our world is so divisive, so out of touch with each other that as a society we tend to be disrespectful to anyone who is different or thinks differently.  Even within our own inner circle of friends and neighbors, are we doing all that we can to be considerate/appreciative of them…regardless of how inconsiderate they may be to us?

I know it’s a tall order.   So let’s start with ourselves.  Let’s be more respective of and to ourselves.   We all  have value.  When we learn to honor ourselves, we will in turn learn how to honor others.  If this process requires that we stand up to someone for the first time, let’s do so with respect even if we fail to receive it in return. Know that sometimes the most respectful thing we can do in a given situation may be to walk away, to let them go.

Ponder the word respect…”find out what it means to you” as you color this month’s mandala.

January 2010 Mandala of the Month

January 2010 MOTM

Download the January 2010 Mandala of the Month (~700kb)

Up until this morning I had little idea of what January’s MOTM would be.  Then I woke up from a short but powerful dream.  When I finished analyzing it I realized that I need to create more harmony and balance in my life.  Since today is New Year’s Eve, it seemed appropriate and fitting to declare this as my new year’s resolution for 2010:

Strive to create harmony and balance in every aspect of my life

If you want to read about the dream you can visit my dream blog

This mandala, to me, represents harmony…four objects floating along, separate but together.   In 2010 and beyond, let’s strive to each live our lives floating along, separate but together.

For the symmetry and asymmetry purists out there, this mandala may push your comfort levels a bit, since the two exist together here: the 4 symmetrical objects and then the asymmetrical background objects.

The idea of there being four objects is interesting as well.  In reading Carl Jung’s “Man and his Symbols” book, he talks about the four functions of consciousness:  thought, feeling, intuition and sensation.  Once suggestion I would offer is to is to focus on each function as you color each object and pay attention to what comes up for you as you do.

To all of you I whole heartily wish you a harmonious and balanced new year!

Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.  Regardless of how many times we beat our heads up against the wall, it’s still going to hurt.  So here’s my advice:  STOP IT!

If we want different results we have to do things differently and from a different perspective.  Einstein also stated that it’s impossible to solve problems from the same perspective as where they were created (I’m paraphrasing a bit).

Look at these two images…both of them are of Bondi Beach in Australia but from two different perspectives.   This ground level view looks like it could be almost any beach in the world and it with a limited view.

Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach - ground level

From the air, the view differs quite a bit. We see the horizon and what’s ‘around the corner’.  To me, the ‘peninsula’ looks like a crocodile/alligator/dragon head, with the rest of the body going inward over land.  It’s as if it is resting its smiley head in the cool, clear water, taking in some sun.

Bondi Beach - aerial view

Let’s look beyond what we see right in front of us and find a different perspective, a different view of what’s going on in our lives. Before coloring this mandala, rotate it around, look at it from multiple perspectives to find the view that works best for you.

October 2009 MOTM

October 2009 MOTM

Late one afternoon, about 9 years ago my husband and I drove to Mary’s Peak (Oregon) even though the road to the top was still closed due to snow. We stopped at the parking lot next to the road block.

Our initial intent was to hike the trail up for a little while to just check it out and maybe go to the top…it seemed like it should be pretty close to where we were on the trail. As we hiked along, it always seemed that around each ‘next turn’ would be the top of the peak. Two hours later with much exhilaration and being quite sore and worn out we made it to the top.

In the middle of climbing this path, in the midst of a gazillion trees, a defining moment occurred when these gorgeous rays of sunshine came streaking through the trees at a steep angle that just lit up the whole area. It took my breath away it. Regardless of  the forest,  the sun still managed to cut through all the trees and shine before us.

October’s MOTM is all about letting our light shine through regardless of what tries to block us along the way.  What blocks us from shining our light?  What blocks us from moving forward?  Family? Friends?  Fear? Anger?  Doubt?  Chances are we and our negative dialog are our own worst enemies.

Pay attention to the blocks.  Be aware of them first then do what you can to go around them or through them.  It could be that they are there to test your resolve.  How important to you is it to you?  Do you really want it?  What are you willing to do to achieve it?  It could be the block will alter your course to something better.

The road block may have stopped us from driving to the top, yet we managed to find another way up.  The trees may have blocked out most of the sky, yet the sun still managed to find openings to shine through.

Let’s keep moving forward.  Even if we can only take baby steps, we’re still moving forward.

Now go have fun coloring!  :-)

September 2009 MOTM

September 2009 MOTM

Some of you may be old enough to know the Beach Boys song, “Good Vibrations”.   That’s what we’re striving for this month…good vibrations.  We are all energy…you, me, the computer keyboard I’m typing on right now, the chair I’m sitting, and so on.  Energy has a vibration, a frequency.  This month’s MOTM is all about vibrations and what rate of frequency do we want to vibrate.

Imagine a social gathering.  People are coming and going.  One person walks into the room and just lights up the whole place.  Everyone is happy to see that person.  Some people even stop what they are doing to head over to that person because they just want to be in that person’s presence.

Another person walks into the room and has the exact opposite happens.  As a matter of fact some people even walk out of the room.  As sense of dread floats over the room; everyone hoping this new member to the social event stays away from them.

Notice some of the other people at the event: the wallflower, the butterfly, the observer, the BS’er, just to name a few.  We’ve all seen these people, we may have been all of these types of people at one time or another.  One thing they all have in common is that they all are vibrating at a certain frequency.  The higher the vibration, the more people want to be around them.

What frequency rate are you vibrating?  Which person at the social gathering do you want to be?  When we are more upbeat, joyful, in a place of gratitude and appreciation we are vibrating at a higher frequency.   When we are in a state of fear, anger, or worry we are vibrating at a much lower frequency.   We are all responsible for our own vibration.

The higher our frequency the better we feel on all levels.  Sure others around us my try to raise or worse lower our vibration, ultimately, though, it’s our responsibility.   Even when bad things appear to be happening, maintain a higher vibration.  This month let’s focus on our vibration; let’s do all we can to raise it.  Color this month’s MOTM with this thought in mind.  Collectively our higher frequencies can make a dramatic difference in the world around us.

Now go have fun coloring!  :-)

July 2009 MOTM

July 2009 MOTM

Okay how many of you have trouble being still? Anyone? Anyone? I’ll have you know my hand went up first! Let me clarify a bit…I am quite capable of physically being still, it’s being still mentally that’s the challenge.

Two weeks ago I was doing something that required me to take 3 deep breaths, and on the 3rd I was to exhale through my mouth and open my eyes. By breath 2 my mind was already a million miles away and was at count 4 or 5 before I realized it.

What do you think would happen if everyone on this planet would just be still for 10 minutes or even 5 minutes? Can you imagine that? Even for a moment? I hope so because that’s this month’s assignment, as well as coloring this rather intriguing mandala design.

We need to do whatever we can to find moments of time to just be still; that can be anywhere from taking 15 minutes out of your day, each day, to meditate, or to taking a conscious deep breath as often as you can remember throughout the day.

Just stop and be still.   On a physical level, we’ll lower your heart rate/blood pressure, think more clearly, calm our nerves, and just plain feel better.  On another level, we’ll connect with that higher part of ourselves that has all the answers, our intuitive selves, our higher conscious, our soul, or whatever your want to call it.

You can even practice being still while you’re coloring. Color one section or with one color for a while and before you move onto the next section or next color, just stop and be still.

Now go have fun coloring!  :-)

April 2009 Mandala of the Month

April 2009 Mandala of the Month

I was barely started in my meditation for this month’s rather intriguing mandala when the view of the upper half just flew into my head.  The other half came in after I drew out the upper part.

The words, “Pretty, Please” came to mind while I was doing something else and I happened to ask myself, ‘what is the word or phrase for this mandala?’

When I hear the phrase ‘pretty, please’, I’m reminded of a small child being really cute, trying deparately to get what he/she wants.  What also comes to mind is the phrase, “make it pretty, please.”  That’s when I started pondering the word “pretty.”

We use “pretty” in several ways:  I feel pretty good…it looks pretty bad (isn’t that an oxymoron?)…you look pretty.  It’s the last one where we tend to get hung up.  I have people tell me often that they have stopped coloring because they have trouble making it look pretty.

Here’s what I have to say to that…FORGET ABOUT MAKING IT LOOK PRETTY…JUST HAVE FUN COLORING! It’s the experience of coloring that is more important.  If at the end of coloring you happen to like what you see, great!  Otherwise, let it go.  Just color…play with colors, practice, learn about colors…just color!

So, please, please, pretty please, pull out your crayons or pencils and color.  You’ll thank me for it later.  And if you can, have the whole family sit down and color together.

March 2009 MOTM

March 2009 MOTM

This mandala design came to me one section at a time.  First the arched horizontal lines, then the sloping upward lines, and then the shape at the top.  When I was done and contemplating its meaning, the first word that popped into my head was “Hallelujah”.  I continued to ponder this when the word changed to Eureka! and then the words/meaning just flowed.

This is about finding the gold that’s buried inside of all of us.  Some of you may know of your gold, most of us tend to focus on our faults, failings, character defects, or whatever name you give that negative crap that keeps you from growing.  Sadly, they seem to be easier to find and closer to the surface.

Our goal this month is to take the time to find our nuggets of gold buried deep within; our talents, skills, joys, laughter, etc.  Focus on that, let that be our quest.  Color the mandala of the month and let the gold come to the surface.  As it does, proclaim “Eureka!” in any way that works for you.

As the negative speak comes to the surface (and it will), acknowledge it, thank it for sharing, and then let it go like a feather in the breeze.  Continue digging; continue coloring.

Here’s a head start nugget:  You are whole and complete just as you are.  Eureka!

NEW FEATURE: You can now color this mandala online

As always, have fun coloring this month’s MOTM!
